Altai Tavan Bogd trekking

Detailed Trek Description

This trek will take you to a destination few people have experienced. The Western parts of Mongolia are a cultural mix of Muslim and Mongolian traditions. Trekking through this wild countryside will bring in varied experiences and make for an exciting trip of discoveries.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL, GANDANTEGCHINLEN MONASTERY

Upon arrival at the airport we will be welcomed by our guide. He will bring us to our comfortable, centrally located hotel.

In the afternoon we will stroll around Ulaanbaatar. We will visit the Natural and the Historical Museums.

We will stop at the Gandantegchinlen Monastery. It is the largest and most important monastery of Mongolia. We will scroll through the different monasteries and see the magnificent statue of Migjid Janraisig, an 82-food high statue gilded in gold and covered with silk cloths.

(Hotel)

DAY 2: BAYAN OLGII

Today we will take the plane for Olgii, capital city of Bayan Olgii province. Our vehicles will be waiting for us at the airport. Unlike the rest of Mongolia, which is dominated by Khalkh Mongolians, about 90% of Bayan-Olgii's population are Kazakh, almost all of them Muslims. Olgii has even its own little mosque.

From Olgii we will driving on a rough but scenic road into the Khurgan and Khoton Lakes. On the way we will pass Tsenger village and see some petroglyphs dating back from the Bronze Age.

We will set up our tented camp on a truly idyllic spot next to Khoton Lake.

(Tented Camp, B, L, D).

DAY 3 AND DAY 4: KHURGAN AND KHOTON LAKES

On the 3rd day we will start our trekking. We will load all or luggage on camels or back horses and start our trek. For 2 days we will trek along the Khoton Lake. Khurgan and Khoton Lakes are pretty lakes at an altitude slightly over 2.000 meters altitude. South of the lake, into the direction of China you will see the snow capped Altai Mountain Chain.

During our trek we will pass many Kazak nomad families. Sometimes we will stop at a family and share a meal or tea with them. During our trek we will also pass well preserved ancient burial sites.

(Tented Camp, B, L, D).

DAY 5, 6, AND 7: WHITE RIVER

On day 5 we will leave behind Khoton Lake and start trekking along the White River. The White River is one of the many rivers that find its sources in the melting ice of the Tavan Bodg glaciers.

The White River valley is covered with many flowers. If you are luck you might see a Mongolian wild goat named Ibex.

(Tented Camp, B, L, D).

DAY 8: TAVAN BOGD BASE CAMP

After 5 days trekking and before setting of to the Tavan Bogd base camp, we will have a day rest. We will find a nice family where we can build our tented camp site.

(Tented Camp, B, L, D).

DAY 9, 10 AND 11: TAVAN BOGD GLACIER

After a good breakfast and a whole day rest, we will set off for our 3 days expedition to the Tavan Bogd Glacier. We will trek though a high mountain terrain of rocks and wetlands.

After a day trek we will have a beautiful perspective of the 5 mountain peaks of the Tavan Bodg Mountain and of its glacier. In front of you, you will have the absolute top of the Altai Mountain Chain and the highest mountain peak of Mongolia.

On the 10th day you will climb the smallest of Tavan Bogd’s mountain peaks, the Malchin peak (4050 m).

(Tented Camp, B, L, D).

DAY 12: BACK TO BAYAN OLGII.

After our trek back from the Tavan Bogd Mountain of the day before, today we will load everything in our vehicles and drive back to Bayan Olgii.

(Tented Camp, B, L, D).

DAY 13: FLIGHT BACK TO ULAANBAATAR

Flight back to Ulaanbaatar

(Hotel, B, D)

DAY 14: ULAANBAATAR

We will have a full free day to stroll around in Ulaanbaatar and buy some souvenirs before heading back home.

(Hotel, B, D)

DAY 15: DEPARTURE

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for departure

2 OPTIONAL DAYS: KHUITEN PEAK CLIMB EXTENSION

For those of you looking for a challenging extension to your trekking in Western Mongolia, we invite you for our 2 days Khuiten peak climb extension.

We will leave from our base camp and climb the steep and challenging Mount Khuiten (4374m). Depending on the snow we will climb for 4 to 6 hours. Once we get to the top we will be able to look down into Russia, China and Mongolia. The landscapes of all three countries are distinctly different.

OTHER OPTION: DRIVE ONE WAY BETWEEN ULAANBAATAR AND BAYAN OLGII

You could take the 6 days trip to drive one way between Ulaanbaatar and west Mongolia. You will discover a variety of landscapes on the way. It's a great option for people who have more time in Mongolia.
