Flight to Moron

We will travel from Ulaanbaatar to Moron, the capital of Khovsgol province. Depending on the time of arrival, we will either spend the night here or continue driving north to Khatgal village. We’ll stop at the Uushig Deer Stone complex along the way.

The Khovsgol Lake, Mongolia’s blue pearl, is a massive 2.760 square km alpine lake (130 km long and 40 km wide), surrounded by more than 2.000-meter-high mountain chains, dense pine forests, and green meadows with grazing yaks and horses. The lake receives crystal clear water from over 100 small rivers and streams. Just one river, the Egiin, drains the lake, and its waters gradually meet Baikal Lake.

Fun fact: The lake stores approximately 1.5 percent of the world’s fresh water (excluding water contained in icecaps). The lake and rivers are home to a dozen different fish species.

Jiglegiin Davaa

We’ll begin hiking up to the Darkhad Valley today. To cross the Jiglegiin Davaa pass, we’ll have to trek up the Khoridol Saridag Mountain, but it provides a stunning view of the bay. At the pass, there is also an Ovoo where locals worship the spirits of nature. Getting to and from that area during heavy rains can be difficult, if not impossible.

Khoridol & Saridag Mountain

We’ll be trekking through the Khoridol Saridag valley for the next two days. On your right you will see Delger Khan and Nart Mountain peaks, with sharp, snow-capped peaks. The landscape is clear evidence of glaciations, with steep sided valleys, cirques and moraines.

Renchinlhumbe village

Today we’ll set out for Arsain Sair. After crossing the Arsain Gol River, we’ll arrive in Renchinlhumbe village.  The area is the most powerful center of Shamanism in the world. The Darkhadiin Khotgor Depression, which began as a glacial lake, is surrounded on all sides by high mountains. Their heights exceed nearly 3.000 meters in height. Fun fact: Over 150 alpine lakes can be found in the depression.

Shishged and Khogiin River

We’ll be trekking across open valleys and plains for the next two days.   After crossing the Shishged River, we’ll arrive at the Khogiin River.  The Shishgid River is one of Mongolia’s most scenic angling spots. It flows through forested mountains, forming various islets.

Darkhad valley

We’ll be trekking across Darkhad Valley for two more days. Between the Ulaan Taiga and Khoridol Saridag mountain ranges lies the Darkhad Valley, which is located northwest of Khovsgol Lake.

Fun fact: It’s 1600 meters above sea level and spans 4300 square kilometers. Tsagaan Lake and Shishged River, respectively, are the largest of the valley’s lakes and rivers. Even by Mongolian standards, the region is remote and inaccessible.

Various fish species such as Taimen, Lenok, Siberian White Fish, Grayling, Freshwater Cod, and others can be found in the depression’s many small lakes.
